Jade
My footsteps echo through the building as I make my way down the long marble corridor towards my office. It's early and the building is practically empty this time of day, but that's the way I like it… usually.
The only sound is a cleaner in the distance using an industrial polisher to clean the floors, the rhythmic humming of the machine filling my ears and almost drowning out my own racing heartbeat.
Breathe Jade. I remind myself as I try to look calm and collected, at least on the outside. I'm wearing a Kevlar tactical vest underneath my suit. There's a small gun nestled at the base of my spine; Mike wanted insurance that I would be able to handle myself should anything untoward happen. I hear his calming words in my earpiece.
"I'm right here, we have eyes on you baby girl. Just act like it's business as usual. He arrived 30 minutes ago; we are pretty sure he is either in your office or the stairwell adjacent. We have men on all exits, do as he says but if it gets rough you know what to do." I take in a shaky breath. Sure, handle him, he says like it's the most natural thing to do, I think to myself.
"I saw that eye roll" Mike says it playfully.
He is trying to ease the tension; he also knows my sassy arse too well. I definitely rolled my eyes; I'm tempted to flip him the bird for good measure but I've no idea who else is watching so I resist the urge.
"Hopefully it won't come to that, but you need to be prepared Jade." His last words are deadly serious, and I concentrate on just putting one foot in front of the other.
Who knew that you'd miss the monotony of the daily grind. I miss the water cooler gossip, I miss pouring over financials until my eyes sting, the ease of just knowing what was happening day to day and ticking the boxes to make it so. I miss dragging my secretary for coffee at my favourite little café on the corner late in the afternoon just so I could get through the board meetings that I knew would drag on late into the night. Pfft, yeah board meetings. I still remember the last one that brought me to this point in the first place.
Although that night also brought with it much more than I could have ever imagined, good and bad, it was definitely the catalyst for the current events I find myself embroiled in.
